Roger Federer Withdraws From 2021 French Open, Gives Reason

  • He was scheduled to play Italian ninth seed Matteo Berrettini in the last 16.

Roger Federer pulled out of the 2021 French Open on Sunday, a day after beating Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-4), 7-5.

“After discussions with my team, I’ve decided I will need to pull out of Roland Garros today,” the 39-year-old said.

Federer who was featuring in his first Slam since the 2020 Australian Open, further said: “After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly.”

The Swiss 20-time Grand Slam champion clinched victory after three hours and 35 minutes. He was scheduled to play Italian ninth seed Matteo Berrettini in the last 16.

“I don’t know if I am going to play,” Federer had said after Saturday night’s win.

“I have to decide whether or not to continue playing. Is it too risky to keep putting pressure on the knee? Is it a good time to rest?”

Federer had earlier said that he was focusing on next month’s Wimbledon, where he has won a record eight men’s singles titles.
