Erik Ten Hag explained that the decision was down to Ronaldo’s match fitness, with the forward not taking part in a full pre-season with his teammates after only playing 45 minutes of a single friendly game against Rayo Vallecano. Ronaldo left that game early after being substituted at half-time to further intensify speculation about his future at Old Trafford.

He missed the pre-season tour of Asia and Australia due to “family reasons”, an excuse the club accept but his lack of fitness played a contribution to him not being in Erik ten Hag’s first United starting XI for a competitive fixture.
