Russia Declares Counter-Terrorism Operation Amid Ukrainian Incursion

Eko Hot Blog reports in a surprise move, Russia has declared a “counter-terrorism operation” in three regions bordering Ukraine, granting authorities sweeping powers to restrict movement and monitor communications.

The declaration comes as Ukrainian troops continue to advance deeper into Russian territory, with reports suggesting they have reached over 10km inside Russia. The incursion, now in its fifth day, has seen Ukrainian forces seize villages and threaten the regional town of Sudzha.

According to the National Counter-Terrorism Committee (Nak), the measures are necessary to “ensure the safety of citizens and suppress the threat of terrorist acts” by Ukrainian forces. The restrictions apply to the Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk regions.

A video emerged earlier today showing Ukrainian soldiers claiming control over a key Russian gas facility in Sudzha. The footage has been verified by BBC Verify.

Russia has sent reinforcements to the Kursk region, including tanks and rocket-launching systems, and claims to have foiled Ukraine’s attempts to “break through deep into Russian territory”. However, the Russian claims have not been independently verified.

The counter-terrorism measures grant authorities powers to restrict movement of people and vehicles, enter private homes, monitor electronic communications, and order temporary relocation of people.

This development marks a significant escalation in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides accusing each other of aggression. The international community is watching closely as the situation continues to unfold.

Stay tuned for further updates as this story continues to develop.
