Eko Hot Blog reports that Russia detains a man accused of planning a rail bombing in Crimea after a drone was downed over the
Moscow-occupied peninsula.
Following the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, the region has witnessed Ukrainian drone raids and sabotage attempts as Kyiv seeks to regain control.
The Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed that the suspect, a Russian citizen in his mid-40s, had been gathering information on Russian defense ministry facilities and units while preparing for a railway bombing.
“In a hiding place, he had organized, we found and seized an improvised explosive device made using foreign-made plastic explosives,” the FSB reported.
The man was allegedly acting on the “instructions of Ukrainian military intelligence” and has been placed in custody.
According to Russia’s TASS news agency, the man resided in Sevastopol, Crimea.
Video footage on the agency’s website depicts the man, dressed in a black T-shirt and jeans, being removed from a police van. It also shows the individual with a blurred face confessing to his recruitment by Ukrainian military intelligence.
Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed governor of Crimea, cautioned that transport infrastructure had become a prime target for “terrorism” and promised retribution for Ukrainian saboteurs.
“An unenviable fate awaits the Ukrainian agents. They will be found and punished,” he declared.
He later revealed that a Ukrainian drone had been shot down over the northern part of the peninsula but did not provide further details.
