The plane, which belonged to the Ministry of Defence, crashed in the Valuysky urban district, with the pilot ejecting from the Sukhoi Su-25 jet before it crashed. An investigation team and officials from the Ministry of Emergency Situations are currently working on the scene, according to Governor Gladkov.

The ministry later released a statement saying that the plane crashed due to a technical malfunction. The Valuysky district of Belgorod lies along the border of Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, with the crash occurring just 10 miles from the border.

According to Russian news outlet Baza, the jet landed on a barn, setting it on fire and destroying it completely.

The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Russia’s military has been accused of engaging in military activity in eastern Ukraine, which it denies.
