Court documents reveal the case has been assigned to Federal Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee who previously halted criminal proceedings against the former president regarding classified documents found at his private residence.
The Secret Service agent discovered Routh’s firearm as he scouted the area ahead of Trump’s golf game. When the agent fired on the suspect, Routh fled the scene but was later arrested. FBI analysis of Routh’s phone indicated he had been surveilling Trump’s golf course and Mar-a-Lago residence multiple times between August 18 and September 15, and had spent nearly 12 hours near the club before being spotted by the agent.

This incident marks the second assassination attempt on Trump this summer. The first, which occurred at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, resulted in one death and Trump sustaining a minor injury to his ear. The gunman in that case was killed on site and is not believed to be connected to Routh’s plot.
Trump has criticized the Department of Justice and FBI, accusing them of mishandling the investigation and issuing lenient charges. In a statement, Trump referred to the charges against Routh as “a slap on the wrist” and called for the case to be transferred to Florida state authorities, led by Governor Ron DeSantis.
DeSantis has announced the state will conduct its own investigation and potentially pursue harsher charges.
