EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS, has disclosed that no fewer than 54 Nigerian men above the age of 18 were trafficked outside the country for sexual exploitation between 2019 and 2020.
According to the report, a total of 48 men were trafficked in 2019, and six were victims in 2020.
In its recently published 2021 Demographic Statistics Bulletin, the NBS revealed that while women were more popular victims of sexual exploitation, it was not uncommon for men to be exploited.
In 2019, 354 cases of sexual exploitation were recorded for females aged 18 and above, while in 2020, 272 females within the same age range were trafficked.
Aside from this lot, 13 males below the age of 17 were taken out of Nigeria in 2019 for sexual exploitation. The data further revealed that in the same 2019, 12 male adults were trafficked within Nigeria for the same purpose.
In the same period, 143 female adults were exploited within the country by traffickers, and 10 male minors suffered the same fate: six boys in 2019 and four in 2020.
The data showed that the most common reason for trafficking males was internal labour exploitation. Seventy-five males were trafficked for this purpose in the years under review.
