The G-60 lawmakers clarified that the Court of Appeal’s judgment did not reinstate the 27 sacked Rivers State lawmakers but ruled that the lower court lacked jurisdiction.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Lawmakers in the House of Representatives, known as G-60, have clarified that the Court of Appeal’s judgment on the Rivers State House of Assembly did not reinstate the 27 sacked lawmakers.

The group, led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, argued that the Appeal Court did not nullify the dismissal of the 27 lawmakers.

Addressing the press on Thursday, Ugochinyere emphasized that while the Court of Appeal ruled that the Rivers State High Court lacked jurisdiction in the case, it did not explicitly reinstate the lawmakers.

The Rivers State High Court had initially ruled that the 27 lawmakers, who were loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, lost their seats due to their defection from the PDP to the APC.

However, the Court of Appeal’s ruling contradicted this decision, stating that the lower court did not have the authority to rule on the matter.

Speaking to journalists after the verdict by the court, Ugochinyere said, “The Court of Appeal ruling today shouldn’t be misconstrued in any way. The pro-Wike sacked Rivers lawmakers’ seats remain vacant as the Appeal Court didn’t decide on the validity of their illegal decampment nor the declaration of their seats vacant.

“The Appeal Court focused on declaring that the Federal High Court is the only court with the jurisdiction to decide on the legality or illegality of decampment, thereby ruling against the Rivers High Court proceedings.”
