The weeklong celebration of the 2024 International Youth Day in Lagos State has been concluded on Tuesday with a vibrant parade, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu attended the closing ceremony at Campos Mini Stadium on Lagos Island, where he reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to tapping into the potential of young people for the sustainable development and future prosperity of the State.

During the event, Sanwo-Olu unveiled the eight finalists of the third Amplifier Business Clinic and Pitch Contest, a program designed to equip 100 young entrepreneurs with the skills and resources needed to turn their ideas into thriving businesses.

The Governor announced N10 million in business grants to support the finalists’ business proposals, with Maryam Atolagbe emerging as the top winner, receiving N2.5 million for her enterprise.

“This grant is more than financial support; it’s an investment in the dreams of these young entrepreneurs, empowering them to drive economic development in our State,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The Governor also highlighted the theme of the International Youth Day, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development,” emphasizing the importance of digital technology in creating a bridge to a sustainable future for the State’s youth.

“Our renewed commitment to youth empowerment is clear through the new programs, policies, and interventions we’ve launched in our second term. These initiatives aim to empower Lagos’ youth by focusing on key policy pillars,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He elaborated on the State’s efforts in technology and innovation, including the creation of tech hubs and innovation centers that provide young people with cutting-edge tools, training, and mentorship.

“Our goal is to foster a thriving ecosystem where tech-savvy youth can develop solutions for real-world challenges,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu also mentioned the ongoing investments in education, skill development, and infrastructure, such as digital learning platforms, which prepare students for future opportunities.

He noted the success of the Lagos State Employability Support Project, which has trained thousands of youths in digital skills, enhancing their employability and entrepreneurial potential.

He further emphasized the strategic importance of youth leadership programs in advancing sustainable development, economic growth, and social stability.

The establishment of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, where young professionals gain immersive leadership experiences, is a testament to this commitment.

The Governor also noted that the State sponsored 15 young leaders to a study tour and leadership training at the Institute of Management in Helsinki, Finland, and stressed the importance of involving youth in decision-making processes to ensure that policies align with their needs and aspirations.

Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, reflected on the week’s events, which included a press conference, awareness walks, environmental sanitation, a youth conference, and an engagement summit.

The celebration culminated in the launch of the Technical Working Group on Youth Engagement.

Ogunlende highlighted the significance of the Technical Working Group as a testament to the administration’s commitment to enhancing youth development through data-driven decisions, innovative solutions, and collaboration.

“This group comprises experts from both public and private sectors, fostering partnerships to drive youth initiatives forward,” he said.
