Sanwo-Olu: BRT Bus Attackers Will Feel Full Force of Law

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has condemned the recent attack on a BRT bus by hoodlums, who robbed passengers of their belongings.

“It’s disturbing,” he said. “Security agents are on their trail, and they will face the law. People must know that such actions have consequences.”

Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Gbenga Omotoso echoed the Governor’s sentiments during an X Space discussion on vandalism.

“Vandalism is not part of our culture,” he emphasized. “It’s pure criminality.”

Omotoso listed various instances of vandalism, including the removal of electric poles, destruction of concrete to extract iron rods, and theft of manhole covers.

“These facilities are for our comfort,” he said. “Those who destroy them are agents of discomfort.”

The recent BRT bus attack highlights the severity of the issue.

Governor Sanwo-Olu has directed security agencies to hunt down those responsible and ensure they face the law.

Omotoso stressed that “for every crime, there must be consequences” and assured Lagosians that the government will ensure justice is served.

He urged residents to take ownership of public facilities and remain vigilant, reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.

“Lagos is a hub that attracts thousands daily,” he said. “We must ensure that everyone exhibits good behavior.”

Omotoso noted that Section 339 of the Lagos State Criminal Code deals with vandalism, with penalties including fines and imprisonment.

However, he lamented that many incidents go unreported and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring offenders face the law.

Participants suggested introducing a reward mechanism for whistleblowers, which Omotoso supported.

He also emphasized the role of communities, schools, religious organizations, and youth groups in combating vandalism.

The Commissioner concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to protecting public property and ensuring Lagos remains a safe and welcoming city.

“We will keep the State safe for residents and visitors,” he said. “We must maintain decency and stress that Lagos will not condone criminality in any form.”
