The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called on private business owners and philanthropists to identify with the humanitarian organisations dedicated to ensuring protection and provision of assistance to people affected by conflict and other situations of violence worldwide.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the call at the Humanitarian Partnership and Social Investment in Africa event organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross Society, the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented at the occasion by the Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Princess Adebowale Aderemi, said Lagos State by its population and level of socio-economic activities, is bound to experience occasional crisis situations, just as he assured that the relevant government agencies such as Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Safety Commission are always ready to manage unforeseen occurrences.

He, however, solicited the support of experienced leaders from the corporate, business and private sectors in combating crises saying, “I have no doubt that the corporate and humanitarian actors could work together to support and implement impactful humanitarian programs that will yield positive results”.

According to Governor Sanwo-Olu, it is important for Africa to show more commitment to the sustainable development of the continent because there is a need to create and sustain an atmosphere of peace by adopting non-violent means of resolving conflicts.

“This will in the long run drastically reduce humanitarian crisis and enable us to devote resources to developmental issues,” he stated.

Speaking on the activities of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Governor said the North-Eastern part of Nigeria had, in last few years, become one of the places ICRC focused its humanitarian attention, mobilising resources and supporting millions of internally displaced persons particularly, women, children, physically challenged and the aged.

He said the conflict in the North-East has created a large population of IDPs comprising women, children who are in dire need of food, water, shelter and basic drugs, necessitating additional support from private sector establishments to complement government efforts.

“Therefore, it is imperative to call on well-meaning Nigerians, NGOs and corporate organisations to support this initiative and synergise in order to provide humanitarian assistance and safety net to the vulnerable and victims of conflicts in all parts of Africa”, he stated.
