Sanwo-Olu Calls For Mutual Understanding Between Consumer And Producers

Eko Hot Blog reports that in a move to promote sustainable economic growth and development, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has advocated for a harmonious partnership between consumers and producers, urging them to foster an enduring collaboration rather than adversarial relationships.

Addressing the Conference and Exhibition organized by the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) to commemorate the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day, Sanwo-Olu emphasized the interconnectedness of economic actors and the need for mutual understanding.

“Consumers and producers are not adversaries but rather partners in a complex economic ecosystem. While consumers rely on producers to supply goods and services, producers, in turn, depend on consumers’ demand to drive their businesses forward,” the Governor stated.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged the challenges posed by changing market dynamics and highlighted the importance of addressing these issues through innovation and adaptation. He assured that his administration would continue to create an enabling environment that promotes fair competition, protects consumer rights, and supports the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

During the event held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, Chairman of the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade, and Investment, called for increased funding from the government to enable LASCOPA to expand its reach and attend to more complaints from the public.

“LASCOPA can also have established independent laboratories where tests can be conducted, and the status of products certified for necessary actions,” Tobun suggested, advising the agency to evolve and align with present purchasing trends, understand consumer dynamics, and embrace the use of technology where appropriate.

Tobun also urged the agency to strengthen its relationship with the judiciary to ensure speedy trials of court cases involving breaches of consumer rights, thereby increasing public confidence in the agency’s activities.

World Consumer Rights Day is celebrated annually on March 15, with consumer interest groups organizing programs and events to highlight pressing issues faced by consumers globally, while proffering possible solutions and adopting policies to commemorate the day.
