Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the IBILE Oil Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to cleaner energy, environmental sustainability, and economic empowerment.
Speaking at the Pilot CNG Vehicle Conversion Training in Yaba, organized by IBILE Oil & Gas Corporation (IOGC), the Governor, represented by Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, described the program as a bold step toward a cleaner and more prosperous Lagos.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Governor highlighted the transformative potential of adopting CNG as an alternative fuel, noting that transitioning 20% of the state’s transportation fleet to CNG could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality.
He urged collaboration among private sector partners, industry experts, and government agencies to scale the initiative, positioning Lagos as a leader in sustainable energy across Africa.
“This is not just an energy solution; it is a declaration of our resolve to prioritize the well-being of our people and the environment,” Sanwo-Olu said. He encouraged participants to serve as ambassadors for cleaner energy and to spread its benefits throughout the state.
In her remarks, IBILE Oil & Gas Managing Director, Ms. Doyin Akinyanju, described the initiative as pivotal in enhancing Lagos’ transportation system and contributing to a sustainable future.
She noted that the training program focuses on equipping local technicians with the skills needed to convert vehicles to run on CNG safely, supporting a smooth transition to cleaner energy.
The training will continue until March 2025, with technical support from the program’s partner, Landirenzo, for an additional 12 to 18 months.
Akinyanju emphasized that the program would address environmental concerns, reduce transportation costs, and create employment opportunities, positioning Lagos as a hub for CNG technology in West Africa.

She also announced plans for four CNG refueling stations in Lagos by Q1 2025, with 11 more expected between late 2025 and early 2026. These stations will service public transport and other vehicles converted under the program.
