Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu
Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in Lagos State to adopt the old national anthem.
The state’s Head of Service, Bode Agoro, conveyed the governor’s directive in a circular issued late Wednesday night.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu signed a bill returning the old anthem into law earlier on Wednesday.
His assent came after the House of Representatives and the Senate quickly passed the bill into law.
Despite wide criticisms that the bill was unnecessary and replaced an indigenous anthem with a colonial version, the president and the national assembly quickly ensured that it became law. They argued that it conveys the spirit of nationhood better than the replaced anthem.
In the circular directing Lagos MDAs to adopt the old national anthem, the HoS enjoined Accounting Officers to ensure that the newly approved anthem is used at all state events effective immediately.

“It is hereby notified for general information that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed the Bill returning the old National Anthem into Law,” the circular reads.
“Hence, Mr. Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to imbibe the spirit behind the Anthem and adoption of same.
“Accordingly, all Accounting Officers are enjoined to note the contents of this Circular for compliance at all State events effective immediately and give it the deserved Service-wide publicity.”
Nigeria we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ, In brotherhood we stand, Nigerians all, and proud to serve Our sovereign Motherland.
Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign.
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.
O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.
