Eko Hot Blog reports that in the face of Nigeria’s current economic struggles, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Islamic religious leaders have called for patience, unity, and fervent prayers to guide the nation through these trying times.
During the Lagos Central Mosque’s 2024 Annual Ramadan Public Lecture, themed “The Current Economic Situation: Solution from an Islamic Perspective,” Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, urged Nigerians to remain focused and stand with Almighty Allah in prayer.
“What Nigerians need presently is to be patient with the government, while I ask the leaders to come up with policies that will be good for the Nation’s economy,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Acknowledging the challenges arising from the withdrawal of fuel subsidies, the Governor advised, “The reality of things is that the withdrawal of subsidies which we all used to over decades, will come with challenges. So, my advice is that we sustain what we are doing, be prayerful, and be focused, and I am sure that very soon things will change for the better.”
Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of unity and constructive dialogue, cautioning against toxic behavior on social media. “Society cannot afford to be toxic as people go to social media to curse, which is not the solution. The solution is for us all to come together and pray so that things can be better for our country.”
Maintaining that the direction of the government’s efforts is positive, he added, “Things will be tough before they get better, but I pray that Almighty Allah would grant the leaders the strength and fortitude to keep pursuing the right path for the Nation to come out of the present situation.”
The event’s guest lecturer, Alfa Agba of Lagos, Sheikh Mujitaba Giwa, urged Nigerians to be patient and prayerful, attributing the economic downturn to a test from Allah. He noted that Allah tempts nations that are not truthful and harbor unbelievers committing “ungodly” acts.
“Allah tests every nation with five things: Fear, Hunger, Destruction of Currency, Death, and Bad Harvest. But any nation that seeks the face of Allah and does his will, He is always ready to heal their lands and remove hunger, poverty, and deprivations,” Sheikh Giwa added.
The Islamic cleric also advocated for the decentralization of mineral resource management, stating, “Allah has blessed the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory with different natural resources, so why can’t they permit the states to manage their resources instead of the central government allocating its licenses to whoever they please?”
As Nigeria navigates these economic challenges, calls for patience, unity, and faith resounded from both government officials and religious leaders, emphasizing the need for collective efforts and divine guidance to overcome the present adversities.
