Governor Sanwo-Olu gave the commendation at the official commissioning of the modern architectural edifice housing the Thani-Oladunjoye Old People Care Center in Oke-Owode, Epe on Thursday 6th January 2021.

Represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed delight at being a part of the epoch-making event.

Sanwo-Olu described the event as “a historic moment for the ancient town of Epe,”

The Thani Oladunjoye Old people Care Center was established in memory of Late Pa Muhammed Nurudeen Alao Thani Oladunjoye and Mama Sidikat Thani, a private initiative of the Thani Oladunjoye family.

While he appraised the facility as being the first of its kind, Governor Sanwo-Olu averred that the need to cater for the most vulnerable and the elderly in society can not be overemphasised.

“We have refused to come to the reality that some of these elderly people have probably contributed immensely and regardless to the socio-economic development of our society at their prime and now that they have become vulnerable due to old age, we must, as a matter of compulsion begin to take care of them with all seriousness and focus about issues affecting the elderly population. This is what we all deserve to do because one day, we pray to become elderly ourselves and we would want the younger generation not to totally forget about us, ” He said.

Speaking further the Governor described the historic event as “a bold step in re-writing our history as a people and changing the undesirable narrative of our lack of presence inadequately taking care of our elderly population”.

He, thereafter, expressed his delight in being a part of the development in the Epe Division.

“Those of us that are very familiar with me can attest to the fact that at every opportunity such as this event, I’ve always canvassed that nowhere in the world can government alone meet the needs of the people or its citizens. Hence, the need to encourage partnership with high net worth individuals, corporate organisations, and various non-governmental agencies to ensure the welfare of the citizens,” he said.

Governor Sanwo-Olu further appreciated the promoter of the Thani-Oladunjoye Old People Center, stating that such a laudable gesture would go a long way in complementing the efforts of the Lagos State Government in the area of social welfare development in the State.

While he assured that his government would not rest on its oars in making sure the pain of the less privileged, especially the elderly population in Lagos State is ameliorated, he, therefore, enjoined the good people of Lagos State with financial capabilities to establish social infrastructures like the Thani-Oladunjoye family by instituting such in their beloved communities across the State, noting that the development of Lagos is a collective responsibility.

Present at the event were Royal fathers such as Oloja of Epe, Oba Kamorudeen Ishola Animashaun, represented by Obafuwaji, Olu-Epe of Epe Kingdom; HRM Oba Sefiu Adewale and his wife, Olori Aribike Adewale; Alara of Ilara Kingdom, and Oba Dr Olukayode Olufolarin Ogunsanwo.

Others include Epe Local Government Chairman, Princess Surah Animashaun; Epe Constituency I Member, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Abiodun Tobun; APC Stalwart, Alhaji Shakirudeen Anifowose (Dengel); Alhaji Fariu Arebi; Mr Peter Nwosu, Greenlife Pharmaceuticals Chairman, represented by Mr Derrick; Epe LG MOH, Dr Ayeola Nureni; Epe LG Vice Chairman, Alhaji Owolomoshe and Aremo of Epe, Otunba TJ Abass.
