Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered the demolition of five popular markets in the Lagos Island area of the state.
Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure on social media on Sunday afternoon after visiting the affected markets.
The markets are Jankara, Ojo Giwa, Oroyiyin, Idumagbo and Pelewura markets.
The Lagos governor said he was on an onsite inspection of some areas that were affected by floods on Lagos Island when he saw the poor state of the markets.
He said the markets and their surroundings were plagued by indiscriminate dumping of refuse, abuse of drainages and illegal construction of shops and market stalls by some residents.
Sanwo-Olu, therefore, issued a one-week quit notice to the affected people while ordering the Ministry of Environment to begin demolition of illegal structures at the marked markets immediately.
“As part of our administration’s plan for the regeneration of Lagos Island, I went on an on-site inspection of some areas in that axis that were affected by floods,” the governor wrote.
“I visited Jankara, Ojo Giwa, Oroyiyin, Idumagbo and Pelewura market respectively.
“What was sadly visible during this inspection was the outright disregard for their well being, the environment and their surroundings through the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, abuse of drainages and illegal construction of shops and market stalls by some residents.
“I have therefore issued a one-week quit notice to the affected people.
“I promised residents of the government’s plan to regenerate the entire place for the good of the residents and the general populace.
“The Ministry of Environment has been instructed to serve the requisite notices and begin demolition of illegal structures immediately.”
