Sanwo-Olu Receives English Premier League Trophy, Reaffirms Commitment to Sports Development

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, received the English Premier League trophy on Sunday during a ceremony at the Lagos House in Marina.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the trophy was officially presented by Girish Sharma, the Managing Director of Guinness Nigeria PLC.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the significance of the trophy’s presence in Lagos, stating that it underscores the state’s enthusiasm and growth in sports, particularly football.

He also reiterated his administration’s commitment to promoting sports as a means of engagement, social inclusion, and positive change.

“We’re excited Guinness recognises Lagos by bringing the Premier League Trophy here. It’s an inspirational symbol for millions of fans across the state,” he stated.

He noted that sports can drive positive change, connect with the youth, and help unlock skills, potential, and creativity among young people.

“Sports help us build responsible citizens and serve as a platform for engagement,” the governor added.

He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to making Lagos State a welcoming and thriving environment for businesses and residents alike.

“We’re truly pleased with Guinness’s support, especially in sports and other socially responsible ventures,” he said.

Gov. Sanwo-Olu praised Guinness Nigeria for remaining rooted in Lagos and expanding from there to other regions in Nigeria and West Africa.

He encouraged Guinness to explore possibilities for Premier League teams to visit Lagos during summer breaks to connect with local fans.

“We won’t bite or scare them. We just want selfies, hugs, and a chance to meet our football heroes.

“We’ll continue to make Lagos hospitable for companies to grow and ensure a supportive environment for all businesses,” the governor assured.

Ms. Girish Sharma took the opportunity to commend Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team for the progress and achievements made across Lagos State.

He highlighted Guinness Nigeria’s long-standing presence in the country, as the company celebrates its 75th anniversary, and reaffirmed its dedication to making meaningful contributions to the development of Lagos.

“I’m delighted to present the Premier League Trophy and allow fans to experience it firsthand,” Ms Sharma said.

Sharma said the decision to bring the prestigious English Premier League trophy to Nigeria speaks volumes about the country’s deep-rooted sporting culture and passionate fan base.

He said Nigeria has long been a hotbed of football talent, and its love for the beautiful game is well-known throughout the world.

As Match-Day 37 unfolds, all eyes are on Liverpool FC, who have already clinched their 20th Premiership title with four games to spare.
