Eko Hot Blog reports that in response to the economic hardship caused by the removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has announced several measures aimed at cushioning the effects on residents and boosting food sufficiency.

During a chat with journalists at the State House in Ikeja, Governor Sanwo-Olu outlined palliative measures, including the distribution of food packs consisting of rice, beans, and cassava flour (garri) to vulnerable people in the state.
“My administration, in addition to subsisting initiatives, would commence the distribution of food packs such as rice, beans, and cassava flour, known as garri, to vulnerable people in the state,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The governor revealed that the palliative items would be distributed through Community Development Associations (CDAs), religious bodies like churches and mosques, and local governments.

Earlier, the Federal Government had announced the approval of N5 billion for each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enable state governments to procure food items for distribution to the poor in their respective states. Additionally, five trucks of rice were to be released to each of the 36 state governors for distribution.
Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized that the distribution process in Lagos State would be non-partisan, transparent, and credible, stating, “It, however, restated commitment to making sure that distribution process was non-partisan, transparent, and credible.”
The governor had previously met with the 20 chairmen of local government areas and 37 local council development areas, directing them to commence the distribution of palliatives through the disbursement of funds.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged that the palliative “is only one of the many steps the government has taken to relieve people of the difficulties arising from the fuel subsidy removal and strengthen the economy.”

In addition to the immediate palliatives, the governor created the Lagos Food Hub in December 2023 and urged the private sector and individuals to adopt the food hub model to boost food sufficiency in the state, complementing the state’s efforts.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has also urged Sanwo-Olu to convene a stakeholders’ meeting to address the current hardship and adopt sustainable solutions beyond palliatives.
