Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, set for second-term inauguration

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has secured a reelection bid after seeing off challengers from Olajide Adediran popularly known as Jandor, of the Peoples Democratic Party and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

EDITOR’S PICKS

Sanwo-Olu, who was first elected into office on the platform of the All Progressives Congress polled 762,134 votes to defeat his closest competitor, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour from Labour Party who polled 312,329 votes.

A breakdown of the result showed that the incumbent governor won comfortably in many Local Governments like Epe, Ikorodu, Surulere, Ojo, Lagos Island, Badagry, Alimosho, Eti-Osa,  Ajeromi Ifelodun, Mushin, Kosofe, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Mainland, Ibeju Lekki, Ifako Ijaiye, Somolu, Oshodi-Isolo and Agege while the Labour Party managed to win in Amuwo-Odofin.

The victory comes with a huge sigh of relief for the incumbent governor, whose chances at the polls faced stiff prospects after the Labour Party defeated the All Progressives Congress in Lagos during the presidential election.

Much of the build-up to the polls had been characterised by firm assertions by loyalists of the Labour Party, who vowed to wrestle power from the ruling party. However, a significant divide of Lagos indigenes had raised question marks over the identity of the Labour Party candidate, whose eastern ties had made him a subject of vitriols and verbal assails.

Despite the several red flags trailing his identity, Gbadebo’s claim for throne continued to gain increased currency, particularly among the disgruntled Obidients who had expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission during the presidential polls.

Several banters across various media ensued, as supporters of the Labour Party and the APC faced off in what was expected to be a tightly contested election.

On the third leg of the conflict was Olajide Adeniran of the PDP, popularly called “Jandor.” After defecting from the APC, the journalist turned politician had managed to gather significant momentum ahead of the election. However, in what turned out to be a mis-match for Governor Sanwo-Olu, the PDP finished the race as a distant third, behind the APC and LP.

Speaking on the outcome of the polls, member representing Epe Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon Wale Raji hailed Lagosians for keeping faith with the vision of Governor Sanwo-Olu and the APC.

Raji added that the exceptional performance of the incumbent governor spoke volumes in itself, as such, was well deserving of a second mandate to perfect his plan of advancing the status of Lagos as Africa’s most prosperous city.
