At the 2024 Annual General Meeting of the Lagos State University Alumni Association, held at the MRC Hall in Ikeja, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of collaboration between the university and its alumni to drive sustainable progress and foster a just, equitable, and prosperous society.
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. ‘Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, with the theme: “Collaborating for Societal Progress: The Role of Government, Universities, and Alumni in Advancing Society” said the collaboration with Universities and Alumni would go a long way in creating solutions that address societal challenges and empower our communities.
This, he said, can be achieved through Joint Funding Initiatives to support scholarships, research, and infrastructure, and policy advocacy by leveraging the intellectual capital of universities and alumni to influence decision-making. He also mentioned Grassroots Community Engagement using education as a tool for social transformation.
Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to education, emphasizing its role as a foundation for societal development. He also praised Lagos State University for producing graduates who have made notable contributions to the development of both the state and Nigeria as a whole.
He said, “Lagos State University, like the state that birthed it, is a beacon of excellence, fostering innovation, critical thinking, and the nurturing of talents that propel societal growth”.
He highlighted the significant investments made under the T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Developmental Agenda in Lagos State’s public education system. These investments include upgrading facilities, implementing digital transformation initiatives, and providing teacher training programs.
Lagos State University, as a premier institution, serves as a model for the government’s vision of making Lagos a hub of innovation and learning. Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the crucial role that LASU plays in achieving this objective and in promoting educational excellence throughout the region.
Recognizing the notable achievements of LASU alumni in governance, industry, and academia, Governor Sanwo-Olu urged these accomplished individuals to contribute their time, resources, and expertise to support the next generation of students.
He encouraged alumni to participate in mentorship programs, offer financial contributions, and establish partnerships that connect academic knowledge to practical societal needs. By doing so, alumni can inspire current students and exemplify the transformative power of education.
