Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has preached against “hatred, discrimination, and division,” saying these vices could cause severe damage to society.
He made the call after a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Rwanda on Sunday.
Sanwo-Olu had been in Rwanda for the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) leadership retreat which concluded on Saturday night.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Sunday, the Lagos governor said his tour of Rwanda’s genocide memorial gave him a deeper understanding of the immense suffering and loss that occurred.
He, therefore, called for proper management of diversity and promotion of social cohesion in preventing such catastrophic events.
“Today, I had the opportunity to participate in a guided tour and engagement at the Kigali Genocide Memorial,” Sanwo-Olu wrote on X.
“It was a deeply impactful experience as I re-learned about the horrific events that took place during the Rwandan genocide.
“Being in that space, surrounded by the stories, photographs, and artifacts of the victims, there is a deeper understanding of the immense suffering and loss that occurred.
“It is a stark reminder of the consequences of hatred, discrimination, and division within society.
“The importance of managing diversity and promoting social cohesion cannot be overemphasized; the significance of accepting and respecting differences, as well as the need for open dialogue and understanding among people from diverse backgrounds in our community, society, country and the world at large.”
The Lagos governor’s comments came months after the governorship election in the state when his supporters often used divisive rhetoric to divide the electorate.
Some of his supporters were accused of assaulting voters from a different ethnic group.
Sanwo-Olu never condemned these actions until he was declared the winner of the election.
