The Anambra State Government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Welfare and security operatives, has arrested 34-year-old Seminarian, Chukwudi Okoye for allegedly defiling a 10-year-old girl.
Okoye, who is reportedly a seminarian in the Anglican Communion, committed the offense in Amanuke, Awka North Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred in July, was reported to the ministry in August by a whistleblower.
Chidimma Ikeanyionwu, media aide to the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, stated that following the report, the commissioner coordinated with security operatives to track down Okoye, who was subsequently detained and interrogated.
The statement revealed that Okoye admitted to touching the girl but denied penetration, claiming his actions were unintentional and blaming the incident on the devil.
He also alleged that the girl was lured to his bed, where he removed her clothes and assaulted her. The victim, who had been warned by Okoye not to speak out, only reported the abuse after becoming seriously ill a week later.
The girl’s grandmother discovered the incident after noticing her granddaughter’s illness. Upon learning the details, she took the child to Okoye’s house, where he later took them to a hospital, and they were referred to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that the suspect has been handed over to the police and is expected to face charges in court.
The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act of 2015, which addresses violence against women and girls, including rape and defilement, provides for severe penalties, including life imprisonment or up to 14 years in prison, depending on the nature of the offense. Many similar cases are currently under investigation or awaiting prosecution in Anambra.
