Senate President,Lawan Swears In Smart Adeyemi

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has sworn-in Senator- elect,representing Kogi west, Smart Adeyemi.

Adeyemi of the APC emerged winner at the bye-election recently conducted in the district by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC).

Adeyemi defeated his closest rival Senator Dino Melaye who was representing the district.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had over a week ago declared the election inconclusive because the margin between Mr Adeyemi and Mr Melaye is lower than the number of “registered voters in 53 polling units of the 20 registration areas in the zone where elections were cancelled.”

After the main election on November 16, Mr Adeyemi polled 80,118 votes while Mr Melaye polled 59,548 votes in the election characterised by violence, ballot box snatching and vote buying.

The margin of 20,570 votes between the two candidates was far less than the 43,127 registered voters in the 53 polling units where elections were cancelled; hence, the rerun.

With the swearing-in of Adeyemi, the All Progressives Congress (APC) now has 63 Senators in the Upper chamber with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Democratic Party (PDP) having 46 and one member respectively.

Adeyemi is a ranking Senator having served in the 6th and 7th Senate. He was the Chairman Senate Committee on the FCT in the 7th Senate.

He was also a former Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).
