The Nigerian Senate has called for an urgent briefing from the country’s top security and intelligence chiefs regarding recent allegations that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has been sponsoring terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram, in Nigeria.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the heads of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS), and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) have been summoned to address these concerns in a closed session.
The decision to summon these officials comes in response to a motion of urgent national importance sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South.
The allegations have surfaced amid Boko Haram’s nearly two-decade-long campaign of terror in the region, raising significant concerns among Nigerian lawmakers and citizens alike.
The Senate’s move to address these allegations head-on reflects the government’s commitment to transparency and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
Recall that recent allegations made by U.S. Congressman Scott Perry have stirred controversy and prompted investigations into the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) funding activities in Nigeria.
Perry’s claims suggest that USAID has been inadvertently supporting terrorist organizations, including Boko Haram, through its annual budget, which includes cash shipments to madrasas (Islamic schools).
In response to these allegations, President Donald Trump has suspended USAID’s activities for 90 days and ordered an audit of the agency’s funds.
The Nigerian Senate has also taken action by summoning the country’s security and intelligence chiefs to investigate the matter and determine the veracity of Perry’s assertions.
