Eko Hot Blog reports that Senator Neda Imasuen, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, has criticized his colleagues who are plotting to impeach the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Imasuen said that the Senators should focus on more important issues facing the nation, such as poverty, unemployment, and insecurity, instead of impeachment.
He also questioned where the Senators would get the required numbers to remove Akpabio from office, saying that they would not be able to do so.
Imasuen’s comments come after reports that some Senators are plotting to unseat Akpabio when the Senate reconvenes.
The Senators reportedly believe that Akpabio is a rubber stamp and may not be able to carry out his duties effectively.
Section 50(2)(c) of the Constitution requires two-thirds of the 109 Senators to impeach any presiding officer of a legislature.
