Senegal knock Nigeria out of U-20 World Cup

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles crashed out of the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland yesterday after a 2-1 loss to Senegal.

To set up the meeting, Senegal topped their group which had Poland, Tahiti and Colombia while Nigeria barely managed to scrape through a group with Ukraine, USA and Qatar.

In the match played in Lodz, Nigeria had the chance to break the deadlock in the 34th minute as Maxwell Effion had a one-on-one chance but shot straight at Senegal goalie, Dialy Ndiaye.

Nigeria were to pay for the missed chance two minutes later as Amadou Sagna rolled the ball under the on-rushing Olawale Oremade

Ibrahim Niane doubled the lead not long after, in the additional time to put Paul Aigbogun’s team on the brink.

However, Nigeria made a strong start to the second half and were duly rewarded as Aniekeme Okon deflected Success Makanjuola’s shot into the net leaving.

And with the time ticking off, Nigeria pushed further in search of the equalizer but Senegal stood firm to book their spot in the last eight alongside Ukraine, Uruguay, Italy and Colombia.

Three more spots are up for grabs today as France confront USA, Japan tango with South Korea while Mali square off with Argentina.
