The decision to not renew Cisse’s contract came following a request from Senegal’s sports minister, Khady Diene Gaye, according to the local football association.
EDITOR’S PICKS
Cisse, a former captain of the national team and ex-Paris Saint-Germain player, took charge of Senegal in 2015.
Under his leadership, the team won their first AFCON title in 2022 and reached the last 16 of the 2022 World Cup.
However, Senegal’s journey at this year’s AFCON ended in the round of 16, where they were knocked out by hosts and eventual champions Ivory Coast.
The Senegalese Football Association (FA) has announced that an interim coaching team will step in for the 48-year-old Cisse during the two upcoming 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Malawi.
Senegal is currently tied with Burkina Faso on four points after two games in their qualifying group, which also includes Burundi.
They remain unbeaten in their 2026 World Cup qualifiers but trail group leaders Sudan by two points after four matches.
