Five individuals have been sentenced to prison for racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr during a La Liga match against Real Valladolid in December 2022. The offenders hurled insults at the Brazilian star as he walked off the pitch after being substituted.

The Provincial Court of Valladolid announced a one-year prison sentence for each of the culprits, alongside fines ranging from €1,080 to €1,620. These sentences have been suspended on the condition that the individuals do not commit any further crimes within the next three years. They are also banned from attending any football matches during this period.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that La Liga confirmed the court’s decision on Wednesday, April 21, describing it as a major step in the fight against racism in football. The league had filed the initial complaint and led the private prosecution, which was later joined by Vinicius Jr, Real Madrid, and the Spanish Public Prosecutor.

This marks a pivotal moment in Spanish football, as the court officially classified the abuse as a hate crime—an upgrade from past rulings that treated such incidents as mere violations of moral integrity with racial aggravation.

The judgment sends a clear signal that racism will no longer be tolerated in Spanish stadiums. La Liga praised the outcome and reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating discrimination from the game.

In recent related cases, three Valencia fans were sentenced to eight months in prison for racially insulting Vinicius Jr, while another offender received a suspended 12-month sentence after admitting guilt and attending anti-discrimination training.

Under Spanish law, prison sentences of less than two years for non-violent offenses typically do not result in actual incarceration for first-time offenders. However, the convictions are viewed as a strong legal and moral victory in the ongoing campaign against racism in football.
