EKO HOT BLOG reports that Grammy-nominated afrobeat artist, Seun Kuti, has provided insight into the reason behind his recent altercation with a police officer, shedding light on the incident that went viral after he was seen slapping the officer.
Seun Kuti revealed that the police officer had attempted to harm him and his family members, prompting his defensive response.
In a statement shared via his Instastory on Saturday, Kuti addressed the incident, disclosing that he possessed evidence to support his claim that the officer posed a threat to his life and that of his loved ones.
He went on to mention that the policeman had offered an apology, which he accepted. Kuti also urged those accusing him of seeking attention to refrain from interfering in the officer’s employment status.
“He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof, but I’m not seeking attention. He has apologized, and I have agreed not to pursue charges. Let everyone mind their own business, so the officer doesn’t lose his job,” Kuti wrote.
Seun Kuti’s assault on the police officer gained significant attention, resulting in the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, ordering the immediate arrest and prosecution of the artist. The video clip showing the altercation had gone viral, leading to the official response from law enforcement.
Responding to the order for his arrest through his Instastory on Saturday night, Kuti expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation. He welcomed the scrutiny into the incident and expressed his hope that any party found to be at fault would be held accountable.
“I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation! I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted,” Kuti wrote.
As the situation unfolds, the attention surrounding the incident highlights the ongoing tension between civilians and law enforcement in Nigeria. Seun Kuti’s case has sparked discussions regarding police conduct and the importance of maintaining accountability within the force.
