EKO HOT BLOG reports that Seun Kuti, the Afrobeat singer and son of legendary musician Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has been appointed the ‘General Overseer’ of his prison cell by fellow inmates at the State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos.
Seun Kuti is currently being remanded at the facility following an assault incident involving a police officer.
According to Vanguard, during a tumultuous reception, Seun was initially rejected by the inmates when he joined them in the cell. However, after some negotiation and an offer of financial compensation, the inmates accepted him as their leader. They even bestowed upon him a copy of the Holy Bible as a symbol of his authority.
The incident that led to Seun’s arrest occurred on May 13, when a video went viral showing him slapping a police officer on the Third Mainland Bridge.
Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, ordered his arrest. Seun later surrendered himself to the police accompanied by his legal representatives on May 15. He was subsequently arraigned at the Sabo, Yaba Chief Magistrate Court, which ordered his remand.
Upon being placed in the cell with other detainees, Seun encountered resistance from the inmates. They loudly expressed their discontent and demanded his removal from their midst by banging on the protective cell door.
However, Seun managed to defuse the situation by promising to provide a sum of N25,000 to the inmates. He quickly contacted his wife, who promptly delivered the money. Once the payment was made, the inmates accepted him and even allotted him a designated seating area.
Seun’s frustration with the turn of events was evident, as he refused to eat the meals provided to him, including the food brought by his wife. He embarked on a hunger strike that lasted for almost a day and a half before eventually relenting and resuming his meals.
The unexpected climax of the situation occurred when the inmates decided to crown Seun as the ‘General Overseer’ of the cell, entrusting him with leading their prayer sessions whenever necessary. The inmates now enthusiastically chant “GO, GO” in response to Seun’s spiritual guidance.
Witnesses noted that Seun tightly clutched the Bible given to him as he ascended the stairs leading to the office of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Waheed Ayilara, on Friday afternoon. Subsequently, he was led back downstairs and returned to his cell.
Seun has received visits from his elder brother Femi, other family members, his legal representatives, and a few friends during his time in custody.
As Seun Kuti’s legal proceedings continue, the unfolding events within the prison cell have added a surprising twist to his current predicament.
The unexpected turn of events, including his appointment as the ‘General Overseer,’ highlights the intricate dynamics within the prison system.
