Seven Dead, 66 Injured In Gombe Motorcycle Accidents

The Gombe State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Godwin Omiko, has denounced the increasing incidents of crashes involving motorcyclists in the state.

He said between January and March this year, 103 persons have been involved in motorcycle accidents, which left seven persons dead and 66 others with vaying degrees of injuries.

Omiko made this known at a one-day workshop organised by the FRSC for stakeholders in the state on Sunday.

He stated, “Between January and March 2019, 103 persons were involved in motorcycle accident; 66 people were injured and seven deaths were recorded.

According to him, “Twenty-five motorcycle and two tricycle accidents were recorded between April and June involving 177 people; 92 cases of injuries were recorded as well as five deaths; 43 motorcycles and four tricycles were involved.”

Omiko explained that the FRSC was more interested in making better riders and the roads safer than imposing fines on defaulters.

Towards this end, he said the FRSC, in line with the directive of the Federal Government, would commence a fresh round of enforcement of driving licences being used by motorists, including motorcyclists, to tackle the menace.

Representatives of the religious and traditional institutions across the state were present at the event.
