Seven Killed, Many Injured As Gunmen Attack Plateau

At least seven people have been confirmed dead, with several others injured, following a recent wave of terror attacks in the Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Brigadier General (retired) Gakji Shipi, the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Wednesday. He noted that the attack comes after a period of relative calm in the region.

“We have not had this kind of attack in a while until yesterday, so I would not say it’s been an increase, and there have been many reasons for that,” he said.

“We are looking into it, to be able to profile what the real issue is and then provide solutions, but I think it’s just one of those things where people who are not happy when they see there is peace in the land and where people are happy.

“Unfortunately, yesterday we had two separate attacks, one in Kwata and then Daffo. So far, we have casualty rates of seven dead and some injured.”

The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard also confirmed the attack in a statement released on Wednesday.

Farmasum Fuddang, Chairman of the group, expressed deep sadness over the renewed terrorist attacks targeting ethnic minorities in the local government area, despite previous peace agreements with the Nigerian military.

The group reported that the latest attack took place in Daffo on Tuesday night. The victims were peaceful residents in a commercial area close to a military base, resulting in at least seven fatalities.

“We feel betrayed by those responsible for our protection. Close to 10 of our members are currently lying dead, victims of the latest assaults in Daffo and Kwatas communities. These attacks were executed simultaneously on September 3, followed by a week of isolated attacks resulting in sixteen deaths,” the statement read.

The group commended the Special Task Force Operation Safe Haven for maintaining law and order in Bokkos and called for an investigation into the role of some security personnel manning the nearby base in Daffo.

Bokkos local government area has been one of the communities that has witnessed several attacks in recent times.
