Surrogacy has become an increasingly popular option for individuals and couples looking to welcome a child into their lives.
Eko Hot Blog reports that when a woman is unable to carry a pregnancy to term, gestational surrogacy can offer a viable path to parenthood.
A gestational carrier, or surrogate, is a woman who carries and delivers a child for another couple or individual.
Surrogate mothers undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) to become pregnant.
This process involves fertilizing eggs from the intended mother or an egg donor with sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor to create an embryo.
Since the gestational carrier does not contribute her own egg, she shares no genetic relationship with the child.
There are several reasons why surrogacy is becoming a preferred choice for many hopeful parents. Here are seven common factors:
1. Age: As women age, their fertility naturally declines, and the likelihood of having a successful pregnancy can decrease.
Fortunately, working with a surrogate can significantly increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and delivery, as gestational carriers must have had a successful prior delivery of their own child and meet age requirements.
In general, fertility clinics and surrogacy agencies set an age range for surrogates between 21 and 39 years old.
This age range ensures that the surrogate has reached an appropriate level of maturity and emotional readiness for the surrogacy process while also maintaining optimal fertility and a lower risk for pregnancy-related complications.
2. Lack of a Uterus: In some cases, a woman may not have a uterus, making it impossible for her to carry a pregnancy and give birth. There are two primary reasons for this:Genetic malformation and Uterus removal.
In both scenarios, the woman is unable to carry a pregnancy and give birth to a child herself.
However, thanks to advances in fertility treatments and the option of surrogacy, women without a uterus can still have a biological child by using their own eggs (or a donor’s eggs) and their partner’s sperm (or donor sperm) to create an embryo.
The embryo can then be implanted into a surrogate, who will carry the pregnancy and deliver the child for the intended parents.
3. Uterine Structural Problem: In addition to the absence of a uterus, some women may have other uterine conditions or defects that can make conceiving and carrying a child challenging or risky.
Some examples include:Uterine fibroids, Endometriosis, Uterine malformations. In these cases, the woman may be able to conceive a child, but carrying the pregnancy to term might be difficult or dangerous for both the mother and the baby.
Surrogacy can be a safe and viable alternative for women facing these challenges, as it allows them to have a biological child without putting their own health at risk.
4. Personal Decision: As modern family advocates, we believe everyone has the right to build families in the way that supports their personal choices. For some women, surrogacy is not a medical choice, but a social choice.
5. Single parenthood: Single individuals who wish to have a child may choose surrogacy as an avenue to become parents.
6. Same-sex couples: Surrogacy can enable same-sex couples to have a biological child, with one partner contributing their genetic material.
7. Other Medical Conditions: In some cases, a woman may have a medical condition that doesn’t directly impact her fertility but can pose significant risks to her health and the health of her unborn child during pregnancy. Examples of such conditions include: Heart disease, kidney disease, History of certain cancers, severe diabetes. In these situations, surrogacy can provide a safer alternative for women who still wish to have a biological child
Naturally, there are many other reasons for deciding to have a child by working with a surrogate mother, but these seven options alone represent the reasons for tens of thousands of couples in dozens of countries around the world – people who could see their dream of a biological child made reality by means of surrogacy.
