EKo Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) recently organized a two-day training program for medical social workers in Lagos.
The training aimed to equip participants with skills for reporting, providing psychosocial support, and integrating responses to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) into health facilities.
According to the DSVA Executive Secretary, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, the training objective was to enhance capacity to offer psychosocial support and integrate SGBV responses into healthcare. She emphasized that the training presented an opportunity to dispel myths about SGBV.
Vivour-Adeniyi said participants were drawn from across the state to build capacity and acquire knowledge on psychosocial support. She stressed the need for medical workers to be survivor-centered, holistic and professional in their duties and provision of psychosocial support.
The facilitators included Dr. Victoria Omoera, who gave a presentation on “Understanding SGBV and Psychological Trauma Concepts,” and Mrs. Juliet Olumuyiwa Rufai, who spoke on “Stress, Psychological Trauma and Ethics in SGBV Survivor Support.”
Dr. Funmilayo Akinola presented on “Assessing and Addressing Survivors’ Psychosocial Needs and Self-Care for Caregivers.” Mrs. Joy Shokoya covered “Responding to Survivors’ Trauma Counseling Needs.”
