The victims, reportedly Italian nationals, were taken to a hospital in Port Ghalib.
The incident occurred on Sunday, north of Marsa Alam, a popular resort town for divers in eastern Egypt.
The country’s environment ministry stated that the attack took place in “deep waters outside the designated swimming area.”
While the victims were described as foreign nationals, AFP, citing an unnamed Italian foreign ministry source, reported that they were Italians.
The deceased, a 48-year-old man from Rome, and the injured, a 69-year-old man, were both taken to a hospital in Port Ghalib, located about 30 miles north of Marsa Alam.
Authorities announced that the swimming area in Marsa Alam would be closed, and the incident is under investigation.
According to the Shark Research Institute, there have been four confirmed shark attack fatalities in the Red Sea over the past decade.
The most recent occurred in June 2023 near Hurghada, involving a 24-year-old Russian man.
