EKO HOT BLOG reports that Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has responded to the proposal put forth by the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to increase the National Minimum Wage from N30,000 to N200,000 in light of the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.
The TUC, in a joint statement by its President Comrade Festus Osifo and Secretary-General Comrade Nuhu Abba Toro, requested consequential adjustments to the Cost of Living Allowance (COLA), including provisions for feeding, transport, housing, a petrol allowance, and a tax holiday for workers earning below N200,000 or 500 USD per month.
The union is also calling for all state governors to commit to implementing the new wage by the end of June 2023.
Senator Sani, in a tweet, expressed that while the proposal of N200,000 as the new minimum wage sounds appealing, it may be unrealistic considering that many states are yet to pay the current minimum wage unless the government opts to print more money.
