Kaduna’s Financial Quagmire: Shehu Sani Urges Probe Into El-Rufai’s Reign

  • Ex-Governor El-Rufai’s Legacy: Mountainous Debt and Contractual Obligations
  • Calls for Accountability: Sani Demands Independent Investigation Panel
  • Unraveling Potential Misappropriations: A Crucial Step for Kaduna’s Recovery

Eko Hot Blog reports that former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has issued a stern call for the Kaduna State government to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai.

This demand comes in the wake of the state’s staggering debt profile, which Governor Uba Sani recently disclosed has placed immense strain on the government’s ability to fulfill its obligations, including the payment of workers’ salaries.

Editor’s Pick:

According to Sani, the new state government must establish an independent probe panel, led by a professional accountant or auditor, to meticulously scrutinize the actions of former government officials and their associated contractors. The primary objective of this panel would be to account for the substantial funds, including a $350 million loan, and determine if any misappropriations or thefts occurred during El-Rufai’s tenure.

“The looting of Kaduna State cannot be remedied by revelations alone but by courageously constituting a probe panel…to account for the millions in dollars and billions in Naira that were misused or outrightly stolen,” Sani stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday.

Governor Sani’s recent disclosure has shed light on the financial predicament inherited from the previous administration. During a town hall meeting, he revealed that the state is grappling with a debt burden of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities, severely hindering his ability to fulfill basic obligations such as paying workers’ salaries.

Sani’s call for accountability and transparency resonates with the growing concerns among Kaduna residents and stakeholders regarding the state’s financial management under the previous administration.

The formation of an independent probe panel could potentially unravel any irregularities or mishandling of funds, paving the way for corrective measures and ensuring responsible governance moving forward.
