Sheik Ahmad Gumi, a renowned Islamic scholar, recently referred to Nigerians calling for his arrest because he negotiates with bandits.
Sheik Gumi insulted them, calling them clowns, and claiming that he wasn’t the only one who talks to bandits, claiming that even the governors of Kaduna and Zamfara do so.
Sheik Gumi said in an interview with the Daily Post that he was not the first person to engage in conversation with bandits.
He said in the interview that top government officials including Government Matwalle and Governor El-Rufai had done the same.
He said that he was just adding value and that the bandits were religious.
Religion, he says, is the only thing that teaches blood has sanctity. He claimed to be approaching their situation from a religious standpoint.

In the interview, he said that he is trying to gather the bandits and teach them that life is precious and has meaning.
He said that he wants to teach them that they cannot kill, rape, and carry out other deadly activities.
He also claimed that he doesn’t visit or negotiate with bandits without people who are related to the government.
He said that they are not quite noticeable since they are always in the background.
He also revealed that the reason why he called the people calling for his arrest clowns is that such a thing can’t happen since government officials always move with him.
He also further stated that he has made progress with the bandits as some of them are becoming repentant.
He explained that he is treating them as a religious leader rather than a security operative with whom they are likely to have issues. He appears to be engaging their spiritual side in order for them to confess their sins.
He disclosed the true reason for his negotiations with the bandits in his interview. The explanation for this is that security operatives are unable to negotiate with or communicate with bandits, whereas he is able to do so because he is a spiritual leader. After he meets with them, he wants them to surrender peacefully.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has spoken on the role Sheik Gumi is playing in dealing with the bandits.
National Security Adviser to the President, Babagana Monguno, has said that Sheik Guni has promised to help the government in tackling banditry and they are waiting for him.
He said that the government is not unwilling to talk to the bandits but they are not trustworthy.
He said that the bandits are not looking for anything that is profound or valid, they just want to take planned actions to cause pain to innocent people.
He said that the president does not want to use mercenaries to battle the bandits because Nigeria has the resources to do so. The security forces, he claims, are simply underutilizing the tools.
