The situation became dire as the horizontally flared gas emitted loud noises and threatened the structural integrity of nearby buildings. Videos captured by community members depict the alarming magnitude of the shell gas flares, with buildings vibrating and windows shaking due to the intense heat and noise pollution.
“Shell is causing havoc, and damage to the people of Gbarantoru, health-wise, noise pollution. The government should come to our aid. They should relocate the occupants of all the buildings. Houses are vibrating, windows are shaking, and children are scared. There’s no way to sleep at night; heat all over.” – Community Resident reveals
Seiyefa Saiyou Jones, a former councilor in Yenagoa LGA, expressed his dismay at Shell’s disregard for the community’s well-being. He highlighted the detrimental effects of the gas flaring on residents’ health and safety, emphasizing the inability of children to sleep amidst the constant noise and vibrations.
The Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama kingdom, HRM King Bubaraye Dakolo, Agada IV, warned of the potential fatal consequences of the harmful substances released into the air, echoing concerns raised by environmental activists. Nnimmo Bassey, the Executive Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), called for an immediate end to gas flaring, citing its socio-ecological, health, climate, and economic impacts on the people of the Niger Delta.
Chima Williams, Executive Director of ERA/FoEN, condemned Shell’s actions as “eco-terrorism,” urging government intervention to stop further harm to the community and its environment. He called on relevant ministries to hold Shell accountable for its actions and ensure the safety and well-being of affected residents.
