Shettima Unveils $115 Million Expansion Project at West Africa Container Terminal

Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated a $115 million upgrade project at the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, on Wednesday.

The investment stresses APM Terminals’ commitment to Nigeria’s economic growth and strengthens its position as a key trade hub in West Africa.

The ceremony saw the presence of several dignitaries, including Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, represented by his Senior Adviser (Technical), Prof. Babatunde Bernard; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola; Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi; and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority, represented by Executive Director, Marine and Operations, Olalekan Badmus, among others.

In his address, Shettima, represented by Musaddiq Mustapha, Personal Assistant to the President on Subnational Infrastructure, praised APM Terminals for its substantial investment.

He assured that the Federal Government would continue to create a conducive environment for businesses, enhancing service delivery at Onne Port and attracting more vessels.

Shettima remarked, “Nigeria is a country full of opportunities. APM Terminals’ investment in WACT is a testament to the company’s strong commitment to developing ports essential for global trade. We will continue to collaborate with APM Terminals to foster an environment where businesses in global trade can thrive.”

The upgrade project aims to significantly improve efficiency at the port with new Mobile Harbour Cranes, Rubber Tyre Gantries, and advanced Cargo Handling Equipment.

It will also introduce an innovative auto gate system and a modern data center to enhance operational efficiency. The facility’s expanded yard space will improve safety standards and operational security with advanced access control and CCTV systems.

Olaf Gelhausen, Chief Operating Officer of APM Terminals, highlighted the investment as a strong vote of confidence in Nigeria’s economic potential. He emphasized that the transformation of WACT into a world-class facility reflects APM Terminals’ vision of raising industry standards and driving trade and prosperity in West Africa.

APM Terminals operates two major container terminals in Lagos and Onne, handling about half of Nigeria’s container traffic. The company is also planning future investments exceeding $500 million, aimed at further enhancing terminal operations and contributing to local community development.
