The arrested boys are Joshua, Waliu, Gafar, Yusuf, and Oyema.

On Wednesday morning, when residents of the community visited the Idimu Police Station to effect the release of the five boys, they received a shocker as police had taken pictures of the arrested boys with a corpse in front of them and labelled them murderers.

Ekohotblog visited the area and spoke with some concerned residents.

According to Michael (not real name), “there was a community clash between some boys in Idimu, which resulted in the death of one person. Police were alerted about the incident but they couldn’t arrest anybody because of the high profile people in the area. They even threatened to burn them as they were chased away by members of the said community where the fight happened.

“In their haste to find the culprits, they came to our street and picked up five innocent boys. The distance from the Idimu Orisunbare area to our street is so much.

“The corpse they put in front of those boys was picked around Idimu Orisunbare road, in front of Four Square Gospel Church. You can visit the place and ask around. Everybody saw the corpse there”, he said.

An elderly man, who identified himself as Baba Kamoru, who joined in visiting the police station, said that they were told that the boys had been moved to Kirikiri maximum prison, Ikoyi.

He said: “The boys were outside doing keeping vigil to ward off those robbers attacking people. They have been doing that since. Suddenly, police officers from the Idimu Police station came and arrested them. We thought it was a small thing, some people in the street gathered and we visited the station in the morning. However, it was another story when we got there. They had paraded them for murder. Boys that were picked in their streets.

“Since Tuesday, we weren’t allowed to see them. There was a fight in Idimu a few days ago and someone was killed. So, what the police are trying to do is to replace these innocent boys with the real killers? Boys, whose only offence was coming out to protect us from robbers?”

Ekohotblog visited the police station but no police officer was willing to talk.

However, an inspector, who begged not to have his name in print confirmed the story and said that those boys were truly innocent but that it is not the duty of the police to say that.

According to him, “someone must be punished for a crime.”

Ekohotblog had on Thursday exclusively reported how police officers have clamped down on vigilante groups in the state.
