Sidestep Planned Nationwide Protest, Kogi Urges Residents

The Kogi state government has advised its residents against participating in a planned nationwide protest set to take place between August 1 and 15, addressing concerns over the rising cost of living and economic hardships in Nigeria.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communication, released a statement on Sunday, expressing the state government’s support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and its efforts to revive the nation’s economy.

Fanwo highlighted various government initiatives aimed at economic recovery, emphasizing the importance of supporting these measures rather than engaging in protests.

“The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR is working assiduously to get the nation’s economy working again,” Fanwo stated.

He noted that the Federal Government has introduced fiscal and monetary policies yielding positive results, alongside economic incentives targeting agriculture, industrialization, infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

Fanwo emphasized that the Kogi state administration, under Alh. Ahmed Usman Ododo, is dedicated to ensuring the benefits of federal efforts reach the state level. The state has initiated substantial investments in agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure, and continues to support households with palliatives to alleviate economic hardships.

“As responsible citizens, there is a need to queue behind the efforts of the government at all levels to frontally deal with the issues challenging our well-being,” Fanwo added.

He argued that protesting at this juncture would undermine the rebuilding process and could lead to destabilization like the aftermath of the #EndSars protests.

Fanwo further claimed that intelligence reports link the planned protest to “opposition figures” and commended Kogi residents for resisting attempts at destabilization.

“We are proud of the fact that the people of Kogi have refused to yield the state to the macabre dance of agents of destabilisation,” he concluded.
