Sidi Ould Tah of Mauritania has been elected as the new President of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), following a decisive vote by the institution’s Board of Governors during the Bank’s Annual Meetings held Thursday in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the announcement was made by Niale Kaba, Minister of Planning and Development of Côte d’Ivoire and Chair of the AfDB Board of Governors. The Board comprises finance ministers and central bank governors from the Bank’s 81 member countries, both regional and non-regional, and serves as the highest decision-making authority in the AfDB structure.
Tah secured the required 50.01% of votes from both categories of members, emerging victorious in a competitive election that saw five high-profile candidates nominated. Other contenders included Amadou Hott of Senegal, Samuel Maimbo of Zambia, Mahamat Abbas Tolli of Chad, and Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala of South Africa.
Tah’s presidency is set to commence on September 1, 2025, succeeding Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who is completing his second term.
With over 35 years of experience in international and African finance, Tah brings a wealth of expertise to the role. As president of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) since 2015, he led transformative reforms that quadrupled the institution’s balance sheet and secured a prestigious AAA rating, elevating BADEA’s standing among the continent’s development banks.

Before BADEA, Tah served as Mauritania’s Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance and held key positions in multilateral institutions, championing financial reforms, crisis response strategies
