Single-Use Plastics Ban Does Not Affect PET Bottles, Water Sachets, and Thicker Nylon Bags – LASG Clarifies
- Tokunbo Wahab clarified on Tuesday that the viral misrepresentations claiming the ban covers all categories of Single Use Plastics (SUPs) are inaccurate.
- The SUPs ban is set to take effect on July 1.
- Other items banned in the single use plastics category are plastic straws, plastic cutlery and all single use carrier bags and nylons that have less than 40 micron thickness
The Lagos State Government has once again emphasized that the upcoming enforcement of its Single Use Plastics (SUPs) ban, set to take effect on July 1, does not include items such as PET bottles, water sachets, and nylon carrier bags with a thickness exceeding 40 microns.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab clarified on Tuesday that the viral misrepresentations claiming the ban covers all categories of SUPs are inaccurate.

Wahab reaffirmed that the government’s stance remains unchanged: only single-use plastics consisting of styrofoam food packs and polystyrene cups are banned.
“Other items banned in the single use plastics category are plastic straws, plastic cutlery and all single use carrier bags and nylons that have less than 40 micron thickness”, he stated
The commission added that in a decisive step to show the government seriousness, the State government has inaugurated the newly created Plastic Waste Management Fund, marking a significant milestone in its ongoing efforts to tackle environmental pollution.
The fund is a joint initiative involving collaboration between the State Government, producers, and Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs). It will be financed by contributions from producers and major importers and will be collectively managed to address the state’s mounting plastic waste issues.
Wahab further emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing the ban on single-use plastics, which is scheduled to take effect on July 1, following an 18-month moratorium since its announcement in January 2024.
