Italian top seed Jannik Sinner secured a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American Taylor Fritz to edge closer to the ATP Tour Finals semi-finals.

The 23-year-old world number one fought off strong resistance from Fritz, clinching his second win in front of a home crowd in Turin. Sinner, who triumphed over Fritz in the US Open final in September, struck 22 winners compared to Fritz’s 19, making for an engaging encounter.

Earlier in the day, Daniil Medvedev bounced back from his opening defeat to beat Alex de Minaur 6-2, 6-4 in the Ilie Nastase Group. The fourth seed, who was visibly frustrated after his loss to Fritz on Sunday, displayed a much more composed performance in Tuesday’s win.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Henry Patten and his partner Harri Heliovaara advanced to the doubles semi-finals with their second consecutive win.

Sinner, who also claimed the 2024 Australian Open title, tops the group table with one round remaining, aiming for another major tournament victory in a year that has also seen him involved in an ongoing doping controversy. With seven tour titles to his name in 2024, this win marked his 67th victory out of 73 matches, cheered on by a packed 12,000-strong crowd that included Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo.

“It was a very tough match – we got to know each other very well in a Grand Slam final,” said Sinner.

“The crowd is helping me a lot, and it’s a big occasion for me.”

Fritz earned the first break point of the match in the seventh game, but failed to capitalize on the opportunity.

The American fifth seed mounted a comeback, recovering from 0-40 in the next game to level the score at 4-4. However, he faltered in his following service game as Sinner applied relentless pressure to take the first set.

The second set was equally competitive, but once again, Sinner proved decisive, breaking Fritz’s resolve with a stunning backhand down the line to go 4-3 up on serve.

Sinner then secured the crucial break, aided by a double fault from Fritz, to seal a hard-fought but well-deserved victory.
