EKO HOT BLOG reports that Smart Adeyemi, the Senator representing Kogi West, has called for an investigation into the naira redesign policy that caused hardship for Nigerians. He specifically urged President-elect Bola Tinubu to invite CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele for questioning to shed light on those involved in the process. Speaking on Friday’s edition of Channels Television Politics Today, Adeyemi expressed his concern for the suffering Nigerians faced during the period the policy was initiated. He said:
“I will call on Emefiele and others to come and explain what happened and what was the reason behind the redesigning of the naira notes…Some people died due to the situation at that time, that policy killed some people innocently.”
Adeyemi also alleged that the redesign was a calculated attempt to frustrate Tinubu’s presidential ambition, saying:
“Tinubu should not forget this because the calculated attempt then was to stop the APC from winning. Now that we have won, in order not to allow a recurrence, we were told that they have redesigned the naira, but where are the new notes that have been redesigned? Gradually they are off circulation.”
He further stated that the Supreme Court intervened at the time to prevent the situation from degenerating into anarchy. However, months after the judgment, Adeyemi noted that the so-called redesigned notes were disappearing.
Despite these concerns, Adeyemi believes that when Tinubu’s presidency begins on Monday, May 29th, Nigerians can expect a new country.
