EDITOR’S PICK:
Fish is ranked among the healthiest foods in the world because of its impressive nutrient contents, some of which include protein, vitamins and minerals, which makes it very good for the body. However, in order to avoid spoilage, fish are usually smoked.
Smoking is a method of cooking whereby the food is placed over a fire and made to dry over a smoke. Smoking is no doubt one of the most popular ways of preserving fish in this part of the world, as fish preserved using this method is usually very tasty and long-lasting.
1. It may increase the risk of cancer
Smoked fish is tasty, but that doesn’t mean that it’s 100% healthy. Research shows that too much consumption of smoked fish can actually heighten the risk of cancers, especially colorectal cancer, which affects the colon. If you must eat smoked fish, then you’re advised to eat it moderately for the sake of your health.
2. It may contain harmful bacteria
Bacteria are found almost everywhere, even in the foods we eat. Experts advise people who have weak immune systems to avoid eating too much-smoked fish as it contains a bacterium known as listeria monocytogenes, which may cause listeriosis (a disease which causes fever and diarrhoea).
3. It is high in sodium
Sodium is only beneficial to the body when it’s consumed in moderation, as it helps to maintain a healthy balance of water and minerals. Research shows that a 100 gram serving of smoked fish has 672 milligrams of sodium, which is on the high side.
