The unrest reportedly started after the soldiers, who were travelling to the Ojo military cantonment, came down to challenge the police officers coordinating traffic on the highway.
It was learnt that an argument ensued between the two security agencies and the soldiers descended on the sister agency officials.
Residents said the argument sparked a fight between the policemen and the soldiers who overpowered them and bundled two officers, including Mr Orukpe to their barracks.
One of the police officers, according to reports, was able to flee the scene after struggling with the soldiers with his gun and shooting in the air.
Mr Orukpe, who was reportedly rushed to the hospital, however, died at the military hospital on Thursday afternoon due to injuries he sustained from the assault meted on him by the soldiers.
Confirming the incident, the spokesman of the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major Niyi Osoba expressed displeasure on the incident.
