Somolu General Hospital Marks World Cancer Day, Advocates Collaborative Efforts To Eradicate Cancer
Eko Hot Blog reports that in commemoration of World Cancer Day on Sunday, 4th of February, 2024, Somolu General Hospital, led by the Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Babalola Ogungbemile, emphasized the urgent need for a collective effort from medical stakeholders globally to find lasting solutions to eradicate cancer.

Quoting statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr. Ogungbemile highlighted that cancer stands as a prominent cause of death worldwide, claiming almost 10 million lives annually.
He stressed that adopting lifestyle modifications, such as abstaining from tobacco and alcohol, promoting a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and regular physical activity, can contribute significantly to cancer prevention.
Dr. Ogungbemile urged Nigerians, particularly residents of Lagos, to prioritize routine medical screenings to assess their health status.
Additionally, he reiterated the importance of citizens embracing the State’s Ilera Eko health insurance plan, which encompasses screening for risk factors associated with various types of cancer.
Commending the State’s initiative on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, aimed at protecting young girls aged nine to 14 from harmful HPV infections that could lead to cervical cancer, Dr. Ogungbemile lauded the project as a praiseworthy endeavor.
He emphasized that with the state-of-the-art medical equipment available in general hospitals across Lagos, there is no necessity for Lagosians to seek medical tourism abroad for quality healthcare services.
Dr. Ogungbemile affirmed Somolu General Hospital’s commitment to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of achieving a cancer-free Lagos, aligning with The T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda of his administration.
Similarly, Doctor Olufunmilayo Olawepo, a Consultant Family Physician, stressed the importance of a healthy diet and advocated for regular health screenings, especially for individuals with risk factors genetically predisposed to cancer.
Dr. Olawepo concluded by underlining the theme for this year’s World Cancer Day celebration: ‘Close The Care Gap,’ emphasizing the significance of raising awareness and ensuring prompt treatment to facilitate the spontaneous eradication of cancer.
